Morphettville, Saturday, 1/4
Conditions - Good
Race 1
1- HARLEY’N’ROSE
3- DODD
6- CHILLED
HARLEY’N’ROSE was met with support when winning well on debut at Gawler in January. He maps to push forwards and take control of the race and looks every chance to back up with another win here today, has had good early market support as well. DODD has competed in 2 competitive 2YO level races here in SA, the last where he was 2nd behind a smart looking type. A run similar to that will be competitive in this. CHILLED resumes off a spell, was competitive in his first prep when finishing 3rd in 2 runs in QLD, doesn’t need to improve much to be competitive here.
Race 2
3- THIRSTY GUEST
1- BLAKMAX
2- PRINCE TIKEA
THIRSTY GUEST kicked off this prep by winning 2 races in a row before competing in a listed race on Adelaide Cup day where he was 5th in a high rated race. This is easier now and he maps well. Expect BLAKMAX should find this easier than the last run he had when at Flemington. While he was 10th, he was still only 2.7L off the winner so it looks better to the eye than it does on paper. His form back in Victoria has been good leading up to this. PRINCE TIKEA is a 2nd up winner previously who should take benefit out of having had the 1st up run now and should be fitter for it.
Race 3
5- JOSEYLIN
4- RUSHAWAY LAD
3- MAGIC MAX
JOSEYLIIN comes across from Victoria and brings strong recent form in stronger races. She has placed in her last 3 and was a winner the start before that as well. She comes in well at the weights and maps well here, hard to beat. RUSHAWAY LAD resumes here today, he has a strong record when 1st up and a strong record over the trip. Expecting him to settle midfield and be finishing off strongly. MAGIC MAX at his best is a strong chance here, should improve for being 2nd up now, but is a slight risk from barrier 2 and may need luck.
Race 4
4- VERSETTO
1- EXTRA MILE
9- KNIGHTSTOWN
VERSETTO bounced back from a poor performance last start to finish 2nd in a very similar race to this one last week. He gets a very similar race here today and looks every chance again. EXTRA MILE was a smart winner here on Adelaide Cup day. He rates highly for this field which means he has a heavy weight, but that is going to be offset by a 3kg claiming aprentice. KNIGHTSTOWN resumes today, he generally does his best work when 1st up into a prep. Has a (3:2-0-0) record when fresh so look for him to be around the mark for this.
Race 5
4- IMPOSING SUSPECT
5- PLAISIR
1- INORDINATE
IMPOSING SUSPECT drops in grade today and rises in trip which looks as if it should really suit him. The way he has been finishing off suggests he will appreciate the rise up now and he maps for a soft run. PLAISIR was a winner of 2 races in a row recently and will now drop in grade looking for something easier. He will likely push forwards and look to control the race. INORDINATE rates highly and has recent good form back in Victoria. Should be respected.
Race 6
10- CHOSEN MISS
1- PRAIRIE FIRE
11- MAY’S WEST
This is a very open race and quite a tough one. CHOSEN MISS was 6th last start here but wasn’t far away from the winners, only finishing. 1.4L off the winner, this doesn’t look much harder and she gets in well at the weights. PRAIRIE FIRE drops in grade coming across the border today, he rates highly here and gets a good run, but maps for a tough run from a wide barrier and with a big weight. Expect MAY’S WEST will likely take up the lead and control this race from the front. She has a strong record over this trip and wouldn’t surprise at a good price.
Race 7
4- PHILONIZE (BEST OF DAY)
1- ANOTHER AWARD
5- QUEMAN
PHILONIZE was impressive last start. She took on the older horses and ran over the 1200m which doesn’t really suit. She also took up the lead on a day that conditions favoured backmarkers, she stuck on well considering those conditions and held on to place. Back to the 1100m is suitable and expect here again to be positive in running and give herself every chance. ANOTHER AWARD was one of the horses that defeated PHIONIZE on Adelaide Cup day. She is a class runner and has Group 1 form when finishing 4th in last years Sangster. Would prefer her over a 1200m trip with the expected speed here. QUEMAN is a last start winner here at Morphettville. He maps well from barrier 3 and is light at the weights. Rarely runs a bad race here.
Race 8
3- EAGLELOU
2- MONTEPULCIANO
5- SUPER SOLAR
EAGLELOU looks close to a win based on his recent form. He has been 2nd in his last 4 starts including an impressive run last start on the parks track when he made good ground up on a track that is hard to cover ground on. He looks as if he will appreciate the bigger track here. MONTEPULCIANO lost in a bob on Adelaide Cup day in a good race. He can ,is his form and doesn’t win often, but does rate highly in this field and will be around the mark. SUPER SOLAR finds ideal conditions here today and wouldn’t surprise at good odds based on his recent form. U
Race 9
2- ZENNZELLA (EW/VALUE OF DAY)
3- KIKI EXPRESS
8- BILLIE BRONX
The Clare Lindop Stakes is a race that is a build up for filly’s who may head towards the up coming Oaks. Happy to play ZENNZELLA at a good EW price and looks well over the odds here. She won a Group 2 last prep before running 4th in the Victorian Oaks when well in the market. She has class and has wins at both 2nd up as well as over the 1600m, she gets to both of those here today. KIKI EXPRESS was only run over late last start when she was carrying 60kgs. She drops down to 56.5Kg for this race today and is now 3rd up. Should be peaking in fitness and has won 3rd up previously, every chance in suitable conditions. BILLIE BRONX was a huge winner on debut, spelled right after that run and has since returned with a win. She looks a good type, should push forwards and control the race but the test will be the trip.
Race 10
16- WAKENJEJA
5- PRESS DOWN
10- ZEBELLA
WAKENJEJA ran a blistering trial recently at Morphettville. She came out since and ran well of the winners here at Morphettville, willing to forgive that run as she did pull up with some issues. Giving another chance here and looking for her to flash home fast with the light weight on her back. PRESS DOWN can a,so be forgiven for his last start, he was galloped on early in running and still managed to finish off well enough considering and only be 3.5L behind the winner. His for previous to that was impressive. ZEBELLA has won 2 in a row now and no reason she can’t make it 3. Only lightly races at this stage, she does look like she has a lot of upside and maps well here to take control of the race up front from a soft barrier.
